This free QR code generator makes codes for the things people in India scan every day: a website link, a WhatsApp chat, a UPI payment or your shop’s Wi-Fi. The code is created in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded.
How to use the QR code generator
- Choose a type: URL/text, WhatsApp, UPI payment, Wi-Fi, email or phone.
- Fill in the fields for that type, for example the number and message for WhatsApp, or the network name and password for Wi-Fi.
- Set the size, the foreground and background colours, and the error-correction level (L, M, Q or H).
- Scan the preview with your phone to test it, then download it as a PNG or SVG.
What each QR type contains
A QR code only stores text. Your phone’s camera reads that text and decides what to do with it. Each type in the tool writes the text in a format that phones understand:
| Type | What is stored | What happens when scanned |
|---|---|---|
| URL/text | The link or text you typed | Opens the link, or shows the text |
A wa.me link with the number and message | Opens a WhatsApp chat with the message ready to send | |
| UPI payment | A upi://pay link | Opens a UPI app with the payee filled in |
| Wi-Fi | A WIFI: string with name, password and security type | Offers to join the network |
A mailto: address | Opens a new email | |
| Phone | A tel: number | Offers to call the number |
UPI payment QR
UPI links follow the format in NPCI’s UPI linking specification. The tool builds the link from your UPI ID (pa), payee name (pn), and the optional amount (am) and note (tn). The currency code for UPI is INR. A link for a tea stall in Madurai might look like this:
upi://pay?pa=meenakshitea@okaxis&pn=Meenakshi%20Tea%20Stall&am=40&cu=INR&tn=Masala%20chaiLeave the amount empty if customers should type it themselves. Always make a test payment of ₹1 to your own QR before you print it.
Wi-Fi QR
The Wi-Fi format is registered as the wifi URI scheme by the Wi-Fi Alliance. It looks like WIFI:T:WPA;S:CafeGuest;P:filter-coffee-26;;, where T is the security type (WPA, WEP or none), S is the network name and P is the password. The hidden option adds H:true for networks that do not broadcast their name. Most phone cameras can join a network from this code.
Watch out: Anyone who can see a Wi-Fi QR can join your network. Put it where only guests can see it, and use a separate guest network if your router has one.
Error correction, size and colour
QR codes store extra recovery data so they still scan when part of the code is dirty or covered. Level L can recover about 7% of the code, M about 15%, Q about 25% and H about 30%. Higher levels make the pattern denser, so use L or M for screens and clean prints, and Q or H for codes on packaging, outdoor posters or tables that get wiped often.
- Keep strong contrast. A dark code on a light background scans best. Light-on-dark and pale colours often fail with older phones.
- Choose the right file. PNG is fine for WhatsApp, websites and documents. SVG stays sharp at any size, so send SVG to a printer for banners and standees.
- Leave a quiet zone. Keep empty space around the code; do not place text or borders right against it.
- Test before printing. Scan with two or three different phones from the distance people will stand.
Shop owners can add the UPI QR to their bills made with the invoice generator. For colour choices, the colour contrast checker shows whether your two colours are far enough apart.

Frequently asked questions
Do these QR codes expire?
No. These are static codes: the information is stored inside the code itself, not on a server, so they keep working as long as the link, UPI ID or Wi-Fi password inside them stays the same.
Can I change a QR code after printing it?
No. Because the data is inside the code, changing the link or amount means making and printing a new code.
Is it safe to put my UPI ID in a QR code?
A UPI ID only lets people send you money. Nobody can take money from your account by scanning it. Still, never scan a QR code to receive money; receiving a UPI payment never needs your PIN.
Why is my QR code not scanning?
The usual causes are low contrast, a code printed too small, no empty margin around it, or a long text that makes the pattern very dense. Shorten the link, increase the size or use darker colours.
