GST Calculator

Add GST to a price or remove it from an inclusive amount, with the CGST, SGST or IGST split shown.

This GST calculator works out the tax on a price in two directions: it can add GST to a net amount, or take GST out of an amount that already includes it. It also shows how the tax is split between the Centre and the State. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use the GST calculator

  1. Enter the amount.
  2. Pick a GST rate from the preset buttons (the current slabs of 5%, 18% and 40%, plus the special rates), or type a custom rate.
  3. Choose the mode. Add GST treats your amount as the price before tax (exclusive). Remove GST treats it as a price that already includes GST (inclusive).
  4. Choose the supply type: Intra-state (seller and place of supply in the same state, so CGST + SGST, half each) or Inter-state (IGST).
  5. Read the net amount, the GST amount, the CGST/SGST or IGST figures and the total.

Current GST rates in India

The GST Council’s 56th meeting replaced the old four-rate structure (5%, 12%, 18% and 28%) with two main rates, a standard rate of 18% and a merit rate of 5%, plus a special rate of 40% for a small list of luxury and “sin” goods. The new rates took effect on 22 September 2025. Pan masala and most tobacco products moved to their new rates on 1 February 2026, when the compensation cess on them ended.

RateUsed for (examples)
0% (nil)Exempt or nil-rated items, such as many fresh foods
5%Merit rate: many everyday goods and some services
18%Standard rate: most goods and services
40%Special rate: items such as pan masala, cigarettes, aerated drinks and some luxury vehicles
3%Gold, silver, jewellery and other precious-metal articles
1.5% and 0.25%Cut and polished diamonds (1.5%); rough diamonds and some precious stones (0.25%)

Watch out: The correct rate depends on the exact HSN or SAC code of your item or service, and rates can change after any GST Council meeting. Check the official rate notifications on cbic-gst.gov.in before you bill a customer.

The maths: adding and removing GST

Adding GST (exclusive price). GST = amount × rate ÷ 100, and total = amount + GST. For ₹1,000 at 18%, GST is ₹180 and the total is ₹1,180.

Removing GST (inclusive price). Here the amount already contains the tax, so you cannot simply take 18% of it. Net amount = inclusive amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate), and GST = inclusive amount − net amount. For ₹2,360 at 18%, the net amount is 2,360 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹2,000 and the GST is ₹360.

Tip: A common mistake is to take 18% off ₹2,360. That gives ₹424.80 of tax, which is wrong, because the 18% was charged on ₹2,000, not on ₹2,360.

CGST, SGST and IGST

When the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state, the GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST, or UTGST in a Union Territory). At 18%, that is 9% + 9%. When they are in different states, the whole amount is charged as Integrated GST (IGST). The total tax is the same either way; only the split changes. Limits of this GST calculator

  • It does not decide which rate applies to your product or service.
  • It does not handle cess, reverse charge, input tax credit or composition-scheme rules.
  • Results are rounded to paise for display; your billing software may round differently.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 12% or 28% GST rate still used?

Not as main slabs. From 22 September 2025 most goods and services moved to 5% or 18%, and a few items to 40%. Check the latest notifications on cbic-gst.gov.in for your exact item.

How do I find GST in an amount that already includes GST?

Use the Remove GST mode. It divides the amount by (100 + rate) and multiplies by 100 to get the net price; the difference is the GST.

When do I charge CGST and SGST instead of IGST?

CGST + SGST apply when the supplier’s location and the place of supply are in the same state. IGST applies to supplies between states. The total tax is the same.
