What lorem ipsum is
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin. It is based on a passage from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a work by the Roman writer Cicero from 45 BC, with words cut and changed so that it has no real meaning. Printers and typesetters have used text like this for a long time, and design software made it common on the web.
The idea is simple: when the words cannot be read, people look at the layout instead. Lorem ipsum also has a mix of short and long words, so a block of it looks roughly like real English text.
When placeholder text helps, and when it hurts
Placeholder text is useful early on, when you are testing a grid, spacing or a font. It becomes a problem when it stays in the design too long, because real content is rarely the same size or shape as dummy text.
| Good use | Risky use |
|---|---|
| Testing a layout grid or column width | Headlines and buttons, where the exact words decide the design |
| Checking line height and font size for body text | Navigation labels and form fields |
| Filling a card template before content is written | Usability tests: users cannot judge a page they cannot read |
| Demo pages while you build HTML and CSS | Anything that could go live by mistake |
As soon as you can, replace dummy text with real or realistic content. A product name like Kanchipuram Silk Saree – Temple Border or a long Tamil place name will test a card far better than three Latin words. Our guides on UX writing and microcopy and wireframes, mockups and prototypes explain how to bring real content in early.
Watch out: Search the whole site for “lorem” before you publish. Leftover placeholder text on a live page looks careless and adds nothing for readers or search engines.
Using the text in HTML
With Wrap in <p> tags turned on, every paragraph comes inside its own <p> element, ready to paste into a page. Without it, you get plain paragraphs separated by blank lines, which suit Figma, Word and other design tools. A wrapped paragraph from this lorem ipsum generator looks like this:
<section class="card">
<h2>Card heading</h2>
<p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.</p>
</section>If you are new to HTML, the headings, paragraphs and formatting lesson explains the <p> element and its neighbours.

Frequently asked questions
Does lorem ipsum mean anything?
Not really. It comes from real Latin by Cicero, but words have been cut and changed, so the result is not proper Latin and has no clear meaning.
Is lorem ipsum free to use?
Yes. The source text is over two thousand years old and the generated text here is free to use in any project.
Should I use lorem ipsum in a usability test?
No. Test participants need real or realistic content to understand the page and complete tasks. Use dummy text only for early layout work.
How many words are in a paragraph?
It varies from paragraph to paragraph. The tool shows the total word count, so you can match the length of the real content you expect.
